Alpha 10 - iteration #06: Word of Warning

Just a notice to inform that the configuration file from the previous versions isn't compatible anymore.

If you have an error message at the application start, just remove the config.xml in your MyDocuments/farcolony  dir. The game will generate a new one.

Sorry for the trouble.

  1. You too are putting not-my documents in "My Documents"?

What's wrong with %appdata%? On Wondows user's AppData is supposed to contain application data while My Documents is for user generated documents. Most standard libraries have convenient functions for finding special folders like System.Environment.GetFolderPath(System.Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData) in .Net.

    1. Now that's a $1,000 question.
Well... frankly in 2009, I just looked at some (old) games, seen they put it in the MyDoc folder and did the same.
But yeah, it makes sense to put it into the %appdata%. I will modifiy that for the next release. I just looked at my code, I have only one variant to change in the call of the lib.

    2. Great to hear! I might sounded harsh in my last comment, sorry.

Back when Windows Vista was introduced, Microsoft has created quite a stir by restricting access to Program Files folder. And then all hell broke loose because not every developer wanted to educate himself and simply put program files in MyDocuments folder. At the same time MS kind of introduced a folder for game stuff, My Games or My Saved Games or something like that but it was not always the same path so game devs didn't really accept the idea. Anyway, today we have fairly consistent locations and stable ways of finding special folders for user data, application data and stuff like that.

    3. Haha it's OK. But yes, When I see at my computer it's like any dev studio do as it please them; games like Fallout 4 and Civilization 4 put their files into the Mydoc/ MyGames, others in Appdata.

"My Games or My Saved Games or something like that but it was not always the same path so game devs didn't really accept the idea."
      Oh OK I see.

Anyway your suggestion was worthwhile because I discovered a crash bug into the interface of the game saving/loading window yesterday and fixed it!
